the family lived at New Penshaw.
Thomas 45, was a bookseller. Jane was 45. Children at home were

Margaret 20, a dressmaker: James 20, a joiner, Thomas 15, a
carpenter, Hannah 15, a dressmaker, William 12, Malcolm 11,
Maurice 8, Edward 6, Annabella 5 and Mary (Henrietta) 1.
On
the 1851 census
the
family lived at New Painshaw.
Thomas 58, was recorded as being a bookseller born at Headley's
Houses. Jane 55, was born at Newbottle. Children at home were

Margaret 34, a milliner: John 24, a sailor: William 22 and Malcolm
20 both Engine firemen: Maurice 18 and Edward 16, both masons:
Annabella 14 and Mary (Henrietta) 11, both scholars. All children
were born in Penshaw.
On
the 1861 census,
Thomas and family lived at Front Row, New Painshaw.
Thomas 69, was a coal miner born Chester le Street, Jane 66,
was born at Houghton. Children at home were -
Margaret 44, a dressmaker born Houghton: William 32, and Malcolm
30, both Engine workers both born Painshaw: Annabella 24, dressmaker
born Painshaw and Mary (Henrietta) 21 /serv born Penshaw.
On
the 1871 census, Thomas and family still lived
at Front Row, New Painshaw.
Thomas 80, was a Brother of Sherburn Hospital. born at Biddick.
Jane 77, was born at Penshaw. Children at home were -
William 40, and Malcolm 42, both Enginemen.
Also present were grandson Thomas John 12 apprentice joiner
born at Penshaw and grand-daughter Sarah Elizabeth 15 a servant
born at Biddick.

Mary Henrietta's birth was registered on 26th November by her
father, Thomas. Her mother was recorded as Jane Drummond (formerly
Burn). The family lived at New Painshaw (Penshaw).
Notes
for William Waites: I have, as yet, not found William's
birth record. At the time of their marriage. William Waites
(25) was a miner living at New Penshaw. His father, Thomas was
a quarryman.
Mary Henrietta (24) also lived at New Penshaw. Her father, Thomas
Drummond was a miner. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Whitfield
and Robert Mitcheson.
Children
of Mary Henrietta Drummond and William Waites were:
i. Annabella Adelaide Waites, born in the December quarter of
1864 - found in the St Catherine's House records. She died in
the June quarter of 1880 aged 15 which explains why she wasn't
found on the 1881 census.
ii.
Thomas Franklin Waites, born on the 3rd of
April 1868, at New Painshaw; died on the 12th of December 1914,
at the Sunderland General
Infirmary.
iii.
Margaret Jane Waites, born 1870, Houghton district.
Margaret Jane's death was found in the St Catherine's House
records. She died in the March quarter of 1872 aged 1.
On
the 1861 census William Waites was found with
his father Thomas 60, who was a Quarryman born in Boldon. William's
mother Catherine 54, was born in Washington.
William 23, was a coal miner born in Washington on this census
- Windy Nook on others.
On
the 1871 census, the Waites family live at
Double Row, New Penshaw.
William Waite 32, was a coal miner, born at Windy Nook. Mary
Henrietta 31, was born at Penshaw. Children were :-
Annabella Adelaide 6, Thomas Franklin 3 and Margaret Jane 7
months all born at Penshaw.
On the same page of the census are Robert Waites and his family
- William Waites brother.
On
the 1881 census, the Waites family are living
at 73 Barrack Row, Penshaw.
William 42, was a coal miner born at Gateshead. Mary Henrietta
41 was born at Penshaw and son Thomas 13, scholar, also born
at Penshaw.
Also on the 1881 census is Thomas Waites of 49 Barrack Row,
Penshaw. Thomas was the son of Robert Waites shown on the 1871
census and who is now dead.
In
the 1891 census the Waites family were living
at 27 Barrack Row, Penshaw.
William 52, is a coal miner born at Windy Nook: Mary Henrietta
50, born at Penshaw and son Thomas 23, coal miner born at Penshaw.
Henrietta died at home on the 24th of April 1912 at 6, Miners
Homes, Shiney Row aged 72 years. The death was registered by
her husband William the next day.
William
died on the
17th of March 1922 aged 84 years, at 1 Chapel
Row, Philadelphia. His death was registered by Matthew William
Curry, nephew who was present at the death. Williams occupation
was recorded as a retired coalminer - wasteman.
Only
known son of Mary Henrietta and William Waites was:
Thomas Franklin Waites, was born on 3rd of
April 1868, at New Painshaw and died on 12th December, 1914
in the Sunderland General Infirmary.
He
married Jane Hannah Geldard on the 2nd of March,
1895 in the Register Office, Gateshead. Daughter of Charles Geldard
and Jane (nee Lazenby), Jane was born on the 7th of February,1873
in Park Place, Darlington.
Thomas Franklin's birth was registered on the 11th of May, 1868
by his mother Mary Henrietta Waites (nee Drummond). Thomas's
father William, was a coalminer at the time and they lived at
New Painshaw.
Jane Hannah Geldard's birth was registered on the 18th of February,
1873 by her mother, Jane Geldard. Jane's father Charles was
a Cartman and they lived at Park Place, Darlington at that time.
I have not, as yet, found out her date of death.
Thomas Franklin Waites and Jane Hannah Geldard were both living
at 17 George Street, Gateshead at the time of their marriage.
Thomas's father, William was a coal miner and Jane Hannah's
father, Charles was a cartman. The marriage was witnessed by
R Johnston and Maggie F M Smith.
Thomas Franklin Waites died in Sunderland General Infirmary
on the 12th of December 1914 and he was buried in Bishopwearmouth
cemetery, on 16th of December 1914.

i. Malcolm Nicholas Waites, born on the 5th of December, 1895,
at 27 Barrack Row, Shiney Row.

for Malcolm Nicholas Waites:
Malcolm Nicholas's birth was registered on 20th December, 1895
by Thomas Franklin Waites mother, Mary Henrietta Waites. Thomas
Franklin was recorded as a coalminer at the time and the family
lived at 27 Barrack Row, Shiney Row.
ii. William Waites, born on the 14th September,
1899, Back Lane, Newbottle and he died on the 22nd of August,
1979, at New Herrington, Tyne and Wear.

William's birth was registered on the 23rd of October, 1899
by his mother Jane Hannah Waites (nee Geldard).
William was awarded the General Service Medal and the Victory
medal for his service in the West Riding Regiment and the 2nd
Battalion of the Manchester Regiment during the First World
War.

Thomas Franklin Waites, born in February 1902, Barrack Row,
Shiney Row and died aged 7 months on the 9th of September, 1902
at Barrack Row, Shiney Row. His death was registered on the
12th of September by Thomas's father - also Thomas Franklin
Waites.
